Yasumitsu Morito
NYC Parks has installed Yasumitsu Morito’s Spirit of NYC in Manhattan’s Carl Schurz Park. The installation is part of the Art in the Parks program, which brings experimental and traditional art to many locations in the New York City area. Spirit of NYC will remain on display in the upper eastside park until April 25, 2017. A reception will be held on location on November 10th from 2 – 4 pm.
Spirit of NYC addresses the human form within space, what it is to be human and how the human spirit responds to social, political and religious circumstances. The figure sits on a vessel representing the ‘melting pot’ aspect of NYC.
Yasumitsu Morito teaches ceramic sculpture at the Art Students League of New York. He had a solo exhibit at the Consulate General of Japan and at Resobox Gallery and Bill Hodges Gallery. His work, Spirit, was featured in Riverside Park South as part of the 2013 Model to Monument program.
