Utah Women’s Walk
Ben Hammond is working on a monument for the Utah Women’s Walk. The Utah Women’s Walk recognizes notable women who have made significant contributions to life in the state of Utah. The project is meant to educate the public about the remarkable and diverse lives of Utah women and to uplift, inspire, and motivate other women to reach for their highest potential.
The garden walk, located at Thanksgiving Point Gardens in Lehi, Utah, will highlight 20 women selected from 100 nominations made by students participating in an American studies course at UVU. The walk, scheduled to open in September 2017, will include exhibits of sculpture, architectural signage and audio listening devices with recorded information about the women’s lives. It is intended that the project will eventually travel throughout the state and that a book featuring all 100 nominees will be available.
Hammond’s works have permanent homes in collections, both public and private, throughout the United States. Since 2007, he has completed portrait busts for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He completed five large sculptures for the Healing Gardens of the Methodist Women’s Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. He is three-time recipient of NSS’ Dexter Jones Award for a sculpture in bas-relief. The Utah Women’s Walk will put his talent for relief to use, as it features eight bas-reliefs surrounding a multi-figure sculpture-in-the-round.
