TN Suffrage Monument
A large crowd gathered on August 26th for the unveiling ceremony of the Tennessee Suffrage Monument. Among the speakers was Guilford Dudley III, grandson of Anne Dallas Dudley, one of the suffragist depicted in the monument. Abby Crawford Milton of Chattanooga; J. Frankie Pierce of Nashville; Sue Shelton White of Jackson; and Carrie Chapman Catt, a national suffrage leader who came to Tennessee to direct the pro-suffrage forces, are also depicted in the monument. The unveiling date coincided with Women’s Equality Day, which celebrates the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. Tennessee passed the proposed 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution by a one-vote margin, becoming the 36th state to ratify the measure.
Alan LeQuire, who resides in Tennessee, also sculpted the over-life-size Athena in Nashville’s Parthenon and in 2003, he presented Musica to the city. Read more about the dedication of his latest work for Nashville, the Tennessee Suffrage Monument.
