On June 15, join National Sculpture Society for a lecture by noted historian Harold Holzer. Holzer will speak about Daniel Chester French (1850-1931), the sculptor who created the statue for the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Holzer’s book, ‘Monument Man: the Life and Art of Daniel Chester French’, is the first comprehensive biography of this fascinating figure and his illustrious career. Full of rich detail and beautiful archival photographs, ‘Monument Man’ is a nuanced study of a preeminent artist whose evolution ran parallel to, and deeply influenced, the development of American sculpture, iconography, and historical memory.

Holzer is one of the country’s leading authorities on Abraham Lincoln and the political culture of the Civil War era. A prolific writer and lecturer, Holzer served for six years (2010–2016) as Chairman of The Lincoln Bicentennial Foundation. For the previous 10 years, he co-chaired the U. S. Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission (ALBC), appointed by President Clinton. President Bush awarded Holzer the National Humanities Medal in 2008. In 2013, Holzer wrote an essay on Lincoln for the official program at the re-inauguration of President Obama. He is now co-chairman of The Lincoln Forum.

Holzer’s lecture will be followed by comments from Donna Hassler, Executive Director of Chesterwood.  Chesterwood is the home, studio and gardens of Daniel Chester French, located on 122 acres in Stockbridge, MA.
