Work is ongoing at the Crazy Horse Memorial in Crazy Horse, SD.  Mountain carving continues to focus on Crazy Horse’s hand and the horse’s mane.  In March, project managers marked new reference points which are needed to properly identify rock removal areas. In early April, a crew moved equipment out to the end of Crazy Horse’s hand to begin drilling another layer approximately 2.5′ deep.

Korczak Ziolkowski (1908-1982), past member of National Sculpture Society, went to Black Hills to create a monument of Crazy Horse at the invitation of Chief Henry Standing Bear.  The first blast on the mountain took place on June 3, 1948.  When completed the entire carving will be 641′ long and 563′ high – the world’s largest sculptural undertaking.
