Basil Watson to sculpt Desegregation Monument
NSS Elected Member Basil Watson is currently working on the Desegregation Monument for University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC. The 12-foot statue will honor Robert Anderson, Henrie Monteith Treadwell and James Solomon, Jr. – the first Black students admitted to USC since Reconstruction – on September 11, 1963. Based on a famous photo of the three students descending the steps of the Osborne Administration building of the Columbia, SC university, the historic moment will be captured in bronze and in the fall of 2023 will be permanently installed on the school campus.
