On August 27, the Tanforan Memorial sculpture by NSS Fellow Sandra Shaw was unveiled at the Tanforan Assembly Center Memorial Plaza in San Bruno, CA. The 6-foot tall sculpture is the focus of a permanent memorial plaza that commemorates 8,000 men, women and children who were assembled at this site on their way to internment camps during World War II. The sculpture depicts two Japanese-American children waiting curbside to be bussed to the nearby Tanforan Assembly Center. The figures are based on Dorothea Lange photographs taken of the Mochida family in 1942. On the back of the plinth is inscribed, “For the sanctity of the individual.”  The Tanforan Memorial is located between the San Bruno BART station, 1151 Huntington Ave., San Bruno, Calif. and the Shops at Tanforan.
