Daniel Willig
National Sculpture Society will present the 2019 Dexter Jones Award to Daniel Willig. The $5,000 award is presented annually to a sculptor, between the ages of 18-39, for an outstanding work of sculpture in bas-relief. Willig’s winning bas-relief is Brick Wall.
Honorary Life Fellow of the American Numismatic Society and medallic art collector, Dr. Ira Rezak and sculptors Béla Bácsi and Meredith Bergmann juried the 2019 submissions. Bergmann says, “I’m very glad that Daniel Willig’s Brick Wall was awarded the prize. His skillful draftsmanship and illusionistic treatment of layers of relief are, to me, reminiscent of Augustus St. Gaudens, and he updates that tradition with acute psychological realism and evident empathy. Brick Wall draws on the tradition of bas-relief processions dating back to the Parthenon frieze, yet is vividly contemporary.”
Willig currently resides in Vermont and creates high relief sculptures, portraits, drawings and prints. In 2017, Willig received his BFA, with distinction, from Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts. He plans on attending graduate school to further his knowledge of the arts.
The National Sculpture Society will present the grant on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at the Honors and Awards Dinner. The Dinner is part of the Sculpture Celebration Conference held June 14-16, 2019 in New York City.
